A single pillowcase in 100 per cent mulberry silk, 22 momme, 51 cm by 76 cm, with a hidden zip along one edge so nothing shows when the pillow is on the bed.

Momme is a weight measure, the way thread count is for cotton. A higher momme means more silk in the same area, so the fabric is heavier, holds its shape and lasts longer. Twenty-two momme is at the heavier end of what is sold for bedding. Below about 19 the fabric starts to feel thin and wears faster at the seams.

Mulberry silk is the long-fibre kind, reeled from cocoons of silkworms fed on mulberry leaves. Long fibres are what make the surface even. That is the whole of the difference between it and a shorter-fibre silk, and it is the reason it costs what it does.

What it feels like to sleep on

Smooth, so hair and skin slide across it rather than dragging. Cool to the touch when you first lie down, and it does not hold warmth the way brushed cotton does.

That is a description of the fabric, not a promise about you. Whether a smoother surface matters to you depends on your hair and how much you move in the night, and the honest answer is that some people notice it straight away and some do not.

Most silk shops sell the fabric on what it will supposedly do to your skin and your hair. We do not, because we cannot show you evidence for it, and a pillowcase is not a treatment.

What we can tell you is what the fabric is, what it weighs, how it is finished and how it feels. If a shop is promising you results, ask what the promise is based on.

Washing it

Machine washable on a cool, gentle cycle, in a mesh bag, with a detergent that has no bleach and no enzymes. Line dry out of direct sun. Do not tumble dry it and do not use fabric conditioner, which sits on the fibre and dulls the surface. Iron on the lowest setting, on the reverse, if you iron it at all.

Treated that way a 22 momme pillowcase lasts years. Treated like a cotton pillowcase it will not.
